Journey to the Stone Country

from Live at the Wheatsheaf by Max Savage

/

about

This track was written in honour of the Conniston Massacre that took place over seventy years ago in the remote outback. Its not something that is particularly well remembered in this country; its not something that people particularly want to remember, but I feel that as a country we should remember and commemorate our darkest moments.

lyrics

I never liked the preachers
Oh so I don't want to preach
It's a secret history you know every word
And I don't have time for Sentiment
or heartfelt appeal
So I'll spare you everything between the lines

Well Freddy Brooks was just a trapper
In the year of twenty eight
Never paid up for a trade and stole a woman
Well they found him lying dead
And there his body lay for days
Until the law saw fit ride out and avenge him

This is a journey to the stone country
To write the wrongs that we all know
Too many stories in an old country
Too many stories to be told

The women fled the men stood strong
The rifles cracked like drying skin
Well seventeen were killed in summer heat
And fourteen more were hunted down
Before the week had reached its end
You couldn’t see the sand
But for the bleeding

This is a journey to the stone country
To write the wrongs that we all know
Too many stories in an old country
Too many stories to be told

And oh,
Blood down by the water
Running to the sea
Things may be forgotten
But forgiven they will never ever be

This is a journey to the stone country
To write the wrongs that we all know
Too many stories in an old country
Too many stories to be told
